Confirm the Forgotten Passcode
Before you proceed with any troubleshooting steps, let’s ensure that you genuinely forgot your passcode. It’s important to verify the situation and rule out any other factors causing the issue.
Using a Computer to Unlock a Disabled iPhone
If you find yourself locked out of your iPhone, the most efficient way to regain access is by connecting it to a computer. By utilizing available reset options, you can restore your device and remove the passcode.
- Connect your iPhone to a computer using a Lightning cable.
- Launch the software for your computer, whether it’s iTunes on a Windows PC or Finder on a Mac.
- Allow the software to recognize your device. Connect your device to a computer that you have previously synced with.
- Once your device is recognized, initiate the restore process. This will erase your iPhone and install a fresh copy of the iOS operating system.
- After the restore process is complete, set up your iPhone as new or restore from a backup, depending on your preference.
Unlocking Your iPhone Using iCloud
If you have enabled Find My iPhone and have an active internet connection, you can use iCloud to unlock your device.
- Open a web browser and visit icloud.com on a computer or another device.
- Sign in to your iCloud account using the same Apple ID associated with the locked iPhone.
- Select the Find iPhone option from the iCloud dashboard.
- Click on All Devices and choose the locked iPhone from the list.
- Select the Erase iPhone option to initiate a remote erase.
- Once the erasure is complete, set up your iPhone as new or restore from a backup.
Resetting Your iPhone Using Recovery Mode
If you have never synced your iPhone with a computer or enabled Find My iPhone, you can use Recovery Mode to reset your device. This will erase all data permanently, so be sure to have a backup if possible.
- Connect your iPhone to a computer using a Lightning cable.
- Launch the software for your computer.
- Enter Recovery Mode on your iPhone. The process varies depending on the model:
- For iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button until the recovery mode screen appears.
- For iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the recovery mode screen appears.
- For iPhone 6s or earlier: Press and hold the Home and Top (or Side) buttons simultaneously until the recovery mode screen appears.
- When prompted on your computer, select the Restore option to erase and restore your iPhone to its factory settings.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your iPhone as new or restore from a backup.
